About the Institute
On July 1, 1921, 'Dhaka University' was established to expand higher education in the then undivided Bengal of British India. This institution, built on about 600 acres of land in the Ramna area of Dhaka, was initially known as the 'Oxford of the East'. It started its journey with the special initiative of the then British government and the dedicated efforts of local leaders including Nawab Sir Salimullah. Geographically located in the heart of the city, this campus is unique for its historical architecture and green environment.
Currently, Dhaka University offers modern and up-to-date teaching methods under 13 faculties, 84 departments and 13 institutes. Educational programs are conducted here in semester and course credit systems, which are in line with international standards. The university awards undergraduate, postgraduate, MPhil and PhD degrees, placing special emphasis on research-based education. In addition, the institution is working tirelessly to develop the talent of students through digital classrooms, a rich central library and various laboratories.
Dhaka University is called the birthplace of all democratic and national movements in Bangladesh. The contribution of teachers and students of this university to every achievement from the language movement to the great liberation war is undeniable. Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Dr. Muhammad Muhammad Shahidullah, Satyen Bose and Dr. Muhammad Yunus have studied here. In recent times, this university has again become the center of history in the quota reform movement and student-public uprisings, which bears the signature of its long-standing tradition and political awareness.
