
Brahmaputra River(River)
The Brahmaputra River is a very important and important watercourse in Kurigram district.
It flows through Roumari, Rajibpur, Chilmari and Sadar upazilas of the district.
Entry and course: The river enters Bangladesh from the northeast of Kurigram district and flows southwards.
The main points of the river are Nunkhawa, Chilmari and Hatia in Kurigram.
Geographical isolation: Due to the Brahmaputra River, Roumari and Rajibpur upazilas of Kurigram are completely isolated from the mainland of the district.
Being separated by land, the people of these two upazilas mainly depend on boats for transportation.
River erosion and char areas: It is a very dynamic and changing river.
Every year, erosion changes the map and extent of the char areas of Kurigram and displaces thousands of people.
New chars (sandbanks) are formed as sand accumulates in the char areas.
Protection Project: Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) is implementing various projects to prevent river erosion and control floods, including the installation of concrete blocks and geo bags.
Demand for Bridge: The common people of Kurigram have been demanding the construction of a bridge and railway over the Brahmaputra River to facilitate communication with the mainland.
Due to river erosion, the lives of many people in the char areas of Kurigram have become quite risky.
