Kurigram District is an administrative region of Rangpur Division in northwestern Bangladesh. According to the number of upazilas, Kurigram is an "A" category district of Bangladesh. Location and Area Kurigram district is bordered by West Bengal, India to the north, Gaibandha and Jamalpur districts to the south, Assam and Meghalaya, India to the east, and Lalmonirhat and Rangpur districts to the west. Naming No unquestionable or doubtless information has been found about this. All are legends and common folklore. Some of its points may seem plausible. It is known that at one time, Maharaja Biswa Singha recognized twenty fishermen families as high-class Hindus and sent them to this region. It is believed that the name of Kurigram district was derived from the story of the arrival of these twenty families. From the book 'History of District Naming in Bangladesh' written by Bilu Kabir, it is known that this name was given because twenty families of oilmen settled here. Another folktale is: Rangpur, i.e. this region was once part of the Cooch Behar state. The residents of Cooch Behar are called Koch. They are also a special group of Teor. Their profession is catching and selling fish. Twenty families of these underprivileged lower class Hindu Kochs were sent or brought here from there to settle. It is named 'Kurigram' because of those twenty Koch families. It is also known that the region is named 'Kurigram' because a Hindu tribal or ethnic group called Kuri or Kuri lived in this village. Even today, a small tribal ethnic group called 'Kuri' can be seen living here. The counting system as Kuri is still in use in this region. The eminent scholar J. Poliluski has proven that… It includes 9 upazilas: Bhurungamari, Char Rajibpur, Chilmari, Kurigram Sadar, Nageshwari, Phulbari, Rajarhat, Roumari, Ulipur.
The country was ruled by the East India Company until 1858. After 1858, the power of governance passed to the British government. During the British government, Kuriganj was divided into four thanas. Later, on 22 April 1875, a new subdivision was established. This subdivision was named 'Kurigram'. Due to the Brahmaputra flowing through Kurigram, various primitive peoples came here. Due to these reasons, a civilization developed here. There are no memories of the conquered Aryans here. However, there are some fading royal signs of others. In the twelfth or early twelfth century, the reign of the Sena dynasty began in this region. Their capital was in the village called Chatra in the Bidyananda Union of Rajarhat. Some notable kings of this dynasty were named Nildhwaj Sen, Chakradhwaj Sen, Nilambar Sen. After the fall of the Sena dynasty, the Mughal era began.
