About the Institute
Carmichael College, established in 1916, is one of the best higher education institutions in North Bengal. Named after the then Deputy Commissioner of Rangpur, Lord Baron Carmichael, this college is located in the Lalbagh area of the city, covering an area of about 183 acres. Its architectural style is very beautiful, including the British-era administrative building and the large playground that fascinates visitors. Currently, various subjects are being taught here in a modern manner at the higher secondary, undergraduate and postgraduate levels under the National University. Under the supervision of a skilled teaching staff and with the help of a rich library and science center, students are receiving quality education here.
The distance between Carmichael College and the main city of Kurigram is about 50-55 kilometers. It usually takes one and a half to two hours to reach Rangpur city from Kurigram by bus or by own transport. One can easily travel to this campus by rickshaw or auto-rickshaw from any part of Rangpur city. Due to the easy communication system, students from Kurigram and surrounding districts also travel here regularly to pursue higher education.
The history and tradition of this college are associated with the names of many talented people. Renowned novelist of Bangladesh Humayun Ahmed, prominent educationist and writer Dr. Muhammad Zafar Iqbal and former President Hussain Muhammad Ershad, among others, were students of this college. Blessed with their presence, this campus still stands tall as the heart of education and culture of North Bengal.
