Due to its location along the banks of the Karnaphuli River, the Bakalia Thana area holds special strategic and economic importance. The Shah Amanat Bridge, or the Third Karnaphuli Bridge, passes through this area, connecting Chattogram city with southern Chattogram. Parts of Mia Khan Nagar, Nur Ahmad Nagar, and areas adjacent to Chaktai and Khatunganj fall under this police station, making it a busy mixed commercial and residential area.
The Karnaphuli River flows past the area. Because of river-centric communication and commerce, several old river ports and commercial infrastructures have developed here.
There are several important educational institutions within the Bakalia Thana area, among which Bakalia Government College, Bakalia Government High School, and Chattogram Government Girls' High School are notable. For healthcare, there are various private clinics and local health centers here.
Bakalia Thana is easily accessible by road from Chattogram city. It can be reached via Mia Khan Nagar or the Shah Amanat Bridge connecting road from Kotwali or GEC Circle using buses, rickshaws, or CNG-driven auto-rickshaws.
