
Belgacha Union(Union)
Belgacha Union is an important administrative area in Kurigram Sadar Upazila.
Geographically situated in the basin of the Dharla River, this union is known as an agriculture-based region.
Notable establishments here include the local Union Parishad office, various government primary schools, and religious places of worship.
Among the tourist attractions, the natural scenery along the banks of the Dharla River and the rural landscape captivate visitors.
Recently, news of relief distribution and development activities in this union has frequently appeared in local reports.
However, when the flood situation in Kurigram worsened on August 20, 2024, the low-lying areas of Belgacha Union were inundated, temporarily disrupting local life.
At that time, the Upazila administration provided dry food and emergency assistance to the waterlogged people.
Overall, despite being a river erosion and flood-prone area, the people here are working tirelessly to improve their standard of living through agriculture and fish farming.
Belgacha Union is a union in Kurigram Sadar Upazila of Kurigram District, Bangladesh. Naming It is said that this union was named Belgacha Union because there were many bel trees here during the British period. That abundance of bel trees is no longer there; however, some bel trees still stand tall in Belgacha Mouza, thus maintaining the correctness of the name of this union. However, it is known from the elders of the area that Belgacha Union was formed in approximately 1944 during the British rule with two villages in Khamar Basabari and Sixty-two Parganas. The present Nazira and Palashbari Mouzas of Kurigram Municipality were then part of Belgacha Union. At that time, Hindus had a large majority and influence in this union. That is why most of the villages/mouzas here were named after Hindus. For example, Muktaram, Neelkanth, Hariram, Gangadash, Dhananjay, Atmaram, Bishweshwar, Kale, Kalyan, etc. At that time, the name of the Union Parishad was the Union Board. The Union Board was headed by the Village President. Later, during the Pakistan period, in 1962, the Union Board was changed and the posts of Union Council and Village President were abolished and the title of Chairman was retained.
