
Fulbari(Upazila)
Phulbari is a border upazila of Kurigram district, washed by the Dharla River, with the Indian state of West Bengal located to its north.
Phulbari is an upazila in Dinajpur District, Bangladesh. Phulbari Upazila is located about 45 kilometers from Dinajpur Sadar. Political activities are conducted under the parliamentary constituency Dinajpur-5. Parbatipur Upazila is located to the north, Nawabganj Upazila and Birampur Upazila to the east, Birampur Upazila and the Indian border to the south, and Chirirbandar Upazila to the west. Location and Size Phulbari is an upazila in Dinajpur District. Naming This upazila is one of the most popular upazilas in Dinajpur District, located on the banks of the Chhota Jamuna River. Once upon a time, Phulbari was a fort city, and the city and settlement were built around it. The new modern city has gradually grown in the wake of the ancient city. But no trace of the fort can be found today. Currently, the city's markets and business centers have been built inside the ancient fort. Legend has it that in ancient times, there were many flower gardens in this area. Due to the abundance of flower gardens, this place was named Phulbari. History Recent History Phulbari Agreement On August 26, 2006, a local rally was held against Asia Energy Company for open-pit mining of coal from the Phulbari coal mine. Three people were killed and about two hundred protesters were injured when the BDR opened fire at the rally. Later, when the movement spread to various areas including neighboring Parbatipur and Birampur, the then BNP-Jamaat government was forced to sign the Phulbari Agreement.
