Gachhua Union has repeatedly changed its geographical boundaries and area due to erosion by the Meghna River. As the Meghna River flows past this area, river-based livelihood and fishing are closely intertwined with the local environment.
For transportation, waterways are the primary medium. In addition to road connections with other parts of Sandwip Upazila, travel from the mainland of Chattogram or Noakhali is conducted by boats or launches.
