Hathazari Upazila is an important administrative and densely populated region located about 20 kilometers north of the headquarters of Chattogram District in Bangladesh.
This area is nationally renowned for the presence of its ancient Qawmi madrasa, historical figures, and the main campus of the University of Chattogram.

The Halda River flows through and alongside Hathazari Upazila, holding significant importance for the communication, ecology, and biodiversity of Madunaghat and its surrounding areas. Due to this river, certain parts of the region feature distinct char lands and aquatic characteristics.
This upazila is home to several traditional and historical establishments. Among them, Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam, popularly known as Hathazari Madrasa, is internationally recognized as one of the oldest and leading Qawmi educational institutions in the subcontinent. Additionally, several British-era structures and landmarks associated with the Liberation War enrich the history of this locality.
Hathazari holds a unique position in terms of education. It hosts the University of Chattogram, one of the premier seats of learning in the country, spanning across a vast hilly area in Fatepur and Shikarpur unions. Furthermore, the upazila features Hathazari Government College, numerous reputed secondary schools, and prominent madrasas. For healthcare, there is an Upazila Health Complex along with various medical centers.
Hathazari is easily accessible by road from Chattogram city. The Chattogram-Khagrachhari highway passes through this upazila, connecting it with various northern districts. Railway communication is also available, with trains running from Chattogram toward Nazirhat serving as a mode of transport.
This region is the birthplace of many notable and esteemed personalities. Among them, the renowned Islamic scholar Shah Ahmad Shafi and various prominent literary figures and researchers are especially associated with Hathazari as their birthplace or workplace.
