Kaunia(Upazila)
Kaunia Upazila, nestled along the banks of the Teesta River in the northeastern corner of Rangpur district, is a serene and tranquil township of nature.
This Teesta-washed region is known for its fertile alluvial soil and vast green fields.
The Teesta River, flowing through the heart of Kaunia, has not only enhanced its geographical significance but the riverine islands (chars) along its banks have also added a unique dimension to the upazila's economy and lifestyle.
The lifestyle of the people here is as simple, straightforward, and vibrant as the currents of the Teesta.
The Kaunia Railway Junction, built during the British era, has made this township historically unique; at one time, it was one of the main hubs of communication in North Bengal.
Currently, the Teesta rail and road bridges have closely connected this region with greater Rangpur, transforming Kaunia into an important commercial corridor.
For visitors, Kaunia can be a wonderful destination.
The combination of the picturesque Teesta rail bridge and the road bridge built over the Teesta River creates a magnificent scene at twilight, which fascinates tourists.
Moreover, the traditional markets of the upazila and the touch of local handicrafts deepen the earthy essence of Kaunia.
Notably, this township is historically recognized as the in-laws' home of the great Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain—the village of Pairaband is part of this upazila, which still serves as an inspiration as the pioneer of women's awakening.
In recent times, various government initiatives to prevent erosion of the Teesta River and improve the quality of life for the people in the riverine islands are changing the overall face of Kaunia.
The hospitality of the simple people and the silvery waters of the Teesta together have made Kaunia an integral and proud part of the Rangpur region.
