Patenga Thana features the Bay of Bengal along its western and southern sides, with the flowing Karnaphuli River to the east. Being situated at the confluence of the Karnaphuli River and the sea, the area possesses distinct coastal characteristics, with various jetties and waterway facilities developed along the riverbank.

Major installations within this thana include the outer anchorage and several jetties of the Chattogram Port, the country's primary seaport. Additionally, the Patenga Sea Beach is a highly popular recreation center for visitors. The Shah Amanat International Airport, one of the country's primary international airports, is located within the boundaries of this thana. The Bangabandhu Tunnel, constructed beneath the Karnaphuli River, has further enhanced the transportation network of this area.

Patenga Thana is easily accessible from Chattogram city via the Airport Road or Patenga Road. Travel to southern Chattogram is also facilitated through the use of the Karnaphuli Tunnel.
