About the Institute
Jahangirnagar University (JU) is the only residential public university in Bangladesh, which started its journey in 1970 as 'Jahangirnagar Muslim University' and gained full university status in 1973. Located in Savar, near Dhaka, this campus is appreciated worldwide for its natural beauty. This vast campus of about 697 acres has numerous small and large water bodies, dense forests and a unique combination of biodiversity.
Currently, the university is conducting modern and up-to-date educational programs in 36 departments and 6 institutes under 6 faculties. Teaching is done here in the semester system, where special emphasis is given to practical and research education along with theoretical education. There is a rich central library, state-of-the-art laboratories and various cultural and voluntary organizations for the intellectual development of students. Being a residential university, there is an opportunity for students to live in halls, which is helpful in creating mutual brotherhood and leadership among them.
Jahangirnagar University is known for its open-minded and progressive culture. Eminent personalities like Professor Dr. Abdullah Abu Sayeed and Humayun Ahmed are associated with this institution. Every year in winter, the chirping of guest birds visiting the campus lakes and the aesthetic architecture of the campus attract tourists greatly. In recent times, the protection of the campus environment and the active participation of students in various national issues have established the university as one of the most conscious and vibrant educational institutions of the country.
