Khatunganj was established in the mid-nineteenth century and gradually evolved into the main nerve center of wholesale trade in Bangladesh. Since the British period, this area has gained fame as one of the most important trading centers in Eastern India. The Chaktai-Khatunganj area plays a vital role in the national economy, as wholesale prices for most daily necessities are determined from here. Although tidal water overflow and waterlogging from the Karnaphuli River during the monsoon season are common sights, the commercial significance of the area remains undiminished.
Notable sights in this market include century-old commercial buildings, hundreds of wholesale commission shops, warehouses, and a bustling, round-the-clock working environment. Flowing right beside it are the historic Karnaphuli River and the Chaktai Canal. Nearby landmarks and localities include Asadganj, Chaktai Bazar, Kotwali intersection, and Reazuddin Bazar.
Khatunganj can be easily accessed from any part of Chattogram city by rickshaw, CNG-powered auto-rickshaw, or bus. It is possible to reach this commercial area in a very short time from the Chattogram Railway Station or the Kadamtali Bus Terminal.
