About the Institute
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), formerly known as PG Hospital, is the highest medical education institution in Bangladesh. This institution, which started its journey as the 'Institute of Post Graduate Medicine and Research' (IPGMR) in 1965, was converted into a full-fledged university in 1998. Located in Shahbagh, Dhaka, this university is spread over about 17 acres of land. Its architectural style and vast campus are known as a unique center of medical research.
Currently, higher medical education is being provided here through residency programs, MD, MS, MPH and various diploma courses. Hands-on research education is ensured here under the supervision of modern laboratories, rich libraries and experienced professors. This institution is a symbol of trust in the treatment of complex and incurable diseases of the country. Specialized services are provided to the patients who come for treatment here, combining modern technology.
The distance of this institution from Kurigram district town is about 350 kilometers. The main gate of this university is visible as soon as you arrive in Dhaka by road or air and get off at Shahbagh intersection. It is possible to reach here very easily by using bus, CNG or metro rail from any part of Dhaka city for transportation.
The names of many renowned medical experts and educationists of the country are associated with this institution. National Professor Dr. Nurul Islam, who was the founding director of IPGMR, has made an unforgettable contribution to the history of this institution. In addition, numerous leaders of the country's medical sector have studied and taught here, who are today appreciated at the national and international levels.
