About the Institute
Sir Salimullah Medical College (SSMC) is one of the oldest and most traditional medical schools in Bangladesh. It started its journey as the Dhaka Medical School in the premises of Mitford Hospital in 1875. Later, in recognition of the contribution of Nawab Sir Salimullah and to spread modern medical education, it was upgraded to a full-fledged medical college in 1972. Located in Mitford, Old Dhaka on the banks of the Buriganga River, this institution is spread over an area of about 20 acres. Its architectural style clearly shows the impression of the colonial period, which has given it a unique historical status.
Currently, medical education is being imparted here in a modern and up-to-date manner. In addition to the MBBS course, post-graduate courses in various subjects are also being offered here. Special emphasis is given to practical and clinical education along with theoretical classes under the supervision of skilled teachers and experienced doctors. The Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital attached to the college serve as the main center for hands-on learning for students. In addition, the library, laboratory and modern technology-based classrooms have enriched the learning environment of the students.
The distance of this institution from the main city of Kurigram is more than 350 kilometers. It usually takes 8 to 10 hours to reach Dhaka from Kurigram by road. After reaching Dhaka, the transportation system is quite easy as it is close to Sadarghat or Babubazar Bridge. The names of many talented people are associated with this institution. A large number of renowned doctors and educationists of Bangladesh were students of this college. In addition, language soldiers and prominent people who were associated with this institution have made this college proud even today.
