Sir Salimullah Medical College (SSMC)

Sir Salimullah Medical College (SSMC) is one of the oldest and most traditional medical schools in Bangladesh.

It started its journey as ‘Dhaka Medical School’ in the premises of ‘Mitford Hospital’ in Armanitola, Dhaka in 1875. Later, in 1926, its name was changed to ‘Sir Salimullah Medical School’ in memory of Nawab Sir Salimullah and in 1972, it was upgraded to a full-fledged medical college. Located in a crowded area of Old Dhaka on the banks of the Buriganga River, this college is spread over an area of about 18 acres. This institution, which is a holder of history and tradition, is currently at a unique height in the medical services of the country. Sir Salimullah Medical College is very disciplined in terms of academic activities. In addition to the MBBS course, postgraduate courses on various subjects are completed here. Currently, students are taught in modern multimedia classrooms, rich libraries and well-equipped labs. In addition to theoretical education, the college is affiliated with Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital, which is known as the largest medical center in Old Dhaka, for practical education. There is ample opportunity for intern doctors to learn hands-on, which makes them skilled in their professional lives. The names of numerous distinguished people are associated with this institution, who have made outstanding contributions to the country's medical and social services. In particular, the name of this institution is closely associated with the working lives of legendary doctors like National Professor Dr. Nurul Islam and Dr. Mohammad Ibrahim. In addition, the teachers and students of this college have played a glorious role in the Language Movement and the Great Liberation War. At present, the college authorities have taken various steps to modernize and promote research, which is expected to take this institution further in the research of medical science in the future.
