Sandwip is a coastal island surrounded entirely by rivers and the sea. The Sandwip Channel lies to the east, while the Meghna River and the Bay of Bengal border the north and west. Fertile chars have emerged in various parts of the upazila, among which Urirchar is notable. Frequent river erosion is a defining characteristic of the local topography, causing the island's area and geographical shape to change constantly.
Historically, Sandwip is an ancient settlement that was also known as Chandradwip. During the 16th and 17th centuries, the island was widely discussed as a stronghold for Portuguese and Magh pirates. It features several ancient mosques and historical ponds that bear testimony to early human settlement.
Transportation to and from Sandwip relies primarily on waterways. Travel to Sandwip requires crossing by trawlers, speedboats, and sea trucks from Chattogram city or the Kumira Ghat in Sitakunda. Additionally, a water route operates from Chairman Ghat in Noakhali to Sandwip.
Among the notable personalities from this region, organizers of the liberation struggle and political figures are particularly prominent.
